Ghosts 03:52
Been out here for weeks, chasing the sun foot to the pedal, a man on the run I've been buying time, but it doesn't come cheap there's always a price, a consequence to reap But I'm shedding all my ghosts, one by one not sure when I'll be done I'm shedding all my ghosts, one by one not sure when they'll be gone Early on my way, with a carefree song arrows point ahead, and they can't be wrong But echoes of the past, reverberate finding their way back, for a double take So I'm shedding all my ghosts one by one not sure when I'll be done I'm shedding all my ghosts, one by one not sure when they'll be gone I'm shedding all my ghosts one by one not sure when I'll be done I'm shedding all my ghosts, one by one not sure when they'll be gone

The Desert 04:35
Last night we were pale New Yorkers with only ideas to show collaging our thoughts on to scraps of paper This morning we parted reluctantly letting our hands fall away saying it's not goodbye it's see you later You steered the car away slowly maybe having second thoughts Then I saw you adjusting the mirror saw you turn the radio on They say the west is vast and unfiltered lonely and brutal and free patient and uncomplicated a waking reverie The desert is all-consuming it can topple a man or be a guide and saviour When your hope for the future is slowly becoming a demon inside it's a guru and emancipator Last night I heard you thinking aloud you didn't know I was there You spoke to the open window tested the night air You said the west is vast and unfiltered lonely and brutal and free patient and uncomplicated and it's where I wanna be We travel in search of the promising flickers of light We do what we can and what we're able At takeoff we gather ourselves, at landing we sigh Arrive home to sit at the kitchen table We tell our stories to save our skin talk it out until dawn We write our minds like a poem play our hearts like a song They say the west is vast and unfiltered lonely and brutal and free patient and uncomplicated a waking reverie You said the west is vast and unfiltered lonely and brutal and free patient and uncomplicated and I'll take you there with me

Standing outside, minus 5 clutching a paper cup It's almost spring the river is breaking up A radio somewhere reaffirms the world is on the brink I need your insight need to know what you think I'm waiting for good news I'm waiting for good news I'm waiting for good news I'm waiting for good news Every conversation weighs theory versus fact about how we got here and how we might get back Afternoon is overcast evening's gold and blue The sky is a metaphor for me and you I'm waiting for good news I'm waiting for good news I'm waiting for good news I'm waiting for good news Wallet, glasses, keys, phone I'm ready, ready to go I'm waiting for good news I'm waiting for good news I'm waiting for good news I'm waiting for good news I'm waiting for good news I'm waiting for good news I'm waiting for good news I'm waiting for good news

The outline of your heart is fading The pull of gravity abating My arms are able but aching The ice on the river is flowing Going home

The Bridge 03:52
Enter the night, Ontario wintertime Mid air redefined Enter the men, invisible 5am upon the steel skeleton Prepare the band and the ticker tape parade Alert the press and the motorcade This city will hum and move and heave when the bridge connects the west to the east Enter the wind, bend rattle and buckle in Cruel but innocent Enter the names, the candles all flickering in honour of the brave Prepare the band and the ticker tape parade Alert the press and the motorcade This city will hum and move and heave when the bridge connects the west to the east

I beg, no more like implore you to think of a better reason to be where we are at this moment A string of lights connected to a thread or in other words, a display of fortune smiling of fortune smiling on us of fortune smiling on us Do you see it the same way (frozen in space) every little move a frame (a keepsake) These marks we made if we come back in years from now would we find them? Would we find them waiting Would we find them waiting Do you see it the same way (frozen in space) every little move a frame (a keepsake) Tell me there's a better thing I dare you As if the world outside us is a myth and in our field of sound is all that is living all that is living all that is living

about

String of Lights is the 4th release from Toronto’s The Real Shade. Showcasing the long-standing musical partnership
between singer/songwriter Jane Gowan and indie rock veteran Tim Vesely (Rheostatics, Violet Archers), the album is an authentic and inspired testament to artistic collaboration.

These songs first came to light when Jane attended the Music Residency at the Banff School for Arts and Creativity in the fall of 2019. Back in Toronto, recording began at the Woodshed studios just prior to the pandemic hitting hard. The subsequent lockdown required Gowan, Vesely and drummer Don Kerr to navigate the challenges of tracking the remaining parts in separate spaces and then employing Vesely’s powers of musical alchemy to create the final works.

String of Lights is a voyage into dimensions both real and imagined. Drawing inspiration from Canadian literature, family lore, and sweeping landscapes, the music pulls you into alternate realities and re-designed fables. Gently rolling piano infuses with warm guitars and subtle rhythms. This is a musical journal written in indigo ink on faded
paper, designed to help you see more clearly, while dreaming in colour.

The Real Shade Toronto, Ontario

The Real Shade is a Toronto-based indie-pop band.

It was formed in 2007 when long-time side woman Jane Gowan (Spygirl, Neins Circa, Belinda Bruce) teamed up with bassist Mary Harmer.
